Exit Plan
The Pyramid Scheme where the math isn't mathing anymore is designed around the assumption that we have no birth control and Mom will just be pregnant most of the time for years and/or breastfeeding and tending to multiple young kids, so she can't reasonably work for PAY outside the home and women's work is stuff she can do from home to be a productive, contributing adult member of society.
Weirdly, this doesn't result in some kind of culture prizing women. It results in a culture designed around trying to have one member of every household available for work she can't do and that person is her husband.
So, at least in the US, almost all government policies, employee benefits, serious careers etc. are designed around this implicit assumption that you have a male head of household and his time, energy and mental capacity belong to his employer and other people have flexibility to fit around clearing HIS schedule so he can occupy the position at the top of what has become a Lord of the Flies pile of manure.
That kind of worked historically, or worked well enough to become the default norm across the globe. And then women started entering the work force, especially after we developed hormonal birth control in the 1960s, and they are expected to work LIKE MEN.
And it destroys the flexibility and time availability for tending to anything else in life. This is wreaking havoc with society generally.
I've written a bunch of stuff already on various sites. Stuff on Eclogiselle about things like Very Basic Water Infrastructure and off grid living is written with the implicit expectation that I am writing for people who don't currently have the ability to have one person be a slave to the grind to keep running faster in hopes of staying in place.
I also write sometimes about the concept of the Red Queen Effect. We currently have some absolute incompetent asshole in the US White House who STOLE the election and America is like "Meh. He's a BILLIONAIRE. His Daddy made him rich. Let's pretend that's a proxy for qualified for the job or something." AND just LET him continue running the country into the ground.
Because he doesn't KNOW how to create value and the only way for him to beef up his bottom line in the short term is just ruin lives to extract blood from turnips.
We've run as far and as fast as we CAN with the current economic model and people at the top trying to maintain the style to which they are accustomed are just BLEEDING the people to do it.
We need a new model that provides flexibility and stability and a floor for the people. Because we are PLANNING the ENTIRE economy around the men at the top of the pyramid both for individual nuclear families with a male head of household and government, big corporations etc. that are typically led by men.
Women cannot compete with men in a society that tells ALL members "The role of women is to be his personal servant and cook and clean and free him up to focus ENTIRELY on his job." Even if they are equally educated and qualified and etc, they can't marry a "full-time wife" to take care of all the women's work so she can put all of her time and energy and mental focus into the job.
Planning everything ENTIRELY around maintaining a man at the top of pile has created a top heavy global economy and has sucked individual agency out of society with disastrous political and economic consequences.
Asking women to try to have careers identical to and competing with male careers that are designed that way on the assumption his wife is looking out for his nutritional needs and raising the children etc. means two-career couples may not have kids at all because no one is available to commit time and energy to the children.
I've spent a lot of years collecting anecdotes from people I knew or famous couples or whatever and when David Copperfield and his supermodel girlfriend began discussing marriage, they ultimately decided to break up.
They both had successful careers involving a lot of income and a lot of travel and realized they figured marriage meant spending more time together and neither was willing to ramp it down to make more time for a personal life.
Another famous couple, two Hollywood actors whose names I forget, took turns making movies on location so they could have children and be good parents. They both had successful careers and good relationships with the children and were on the same page about raising the children, so much so that they shared custody equally after getting divorced because they spent no time with each other and no longer had a relationship.
And there's enormous cultural pressure on everyone to continue conforming to existing career paradigms because you don't get health care or retirement benefits etc. if you don't. So men are pretty universally pressured to continue playing that game, like it or not, and women are told to marry well OR have a career, PICK ONE.
Children are growing in poverty and families are being torn apart and it's societal suicide.
If you have a medical crisis or anything else in your personal life and can't keep running faster to stay in place, the entire thing unravels and you may never recover. One consequence: Rising rates of chronic homelessness.
Individuals mostly cannot overcome all of the weight of existing societal policies, expectations etc. to make life work anyway. Not even very smart, educated and wealthy individuals.
The little people essentially have no hope of overcoming it and we are chewing them up and spitting them out at high rates and then living in terror of them and acting like they are badly behaved and dangerous and dismissing the fact that they are mostly a victim of circumstance and that circumstance is actively created by our government and everyone in power going along with this paradigm.
My writing is intended to help people find a way out of that individually and collectively. Because the current system is a vicious cycle that is making almost everyone dysfunctional individuals in a dysfunctional society with little to no hope of an exit from this highway to hell.
Footnote
No, Donald Trump and Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos etc. aren't victims of circumstance. People that privileged are the ones best positioned to find solutions. The job of President is to provide those solutions and Donald Trump explicitly ran on a platform of Make America Great Again.
But it was all hat and no cattle. He had nothing of substance to offer.
